ART STATEMENT
Vision Charter School is an advocate of the arts. We believe students will achieve greater success in all academic curricula if classrooms incorporate art throughout the year. Art builds self-esteem and instills life-skills, such as, reasoning, decision-making, creative thinking, problem-solving, and visualizing.

Master Of The Month:

Each month, each class at Vision Charter School will learn about a “Master Artist”. Each school year there will be a different rotation of Master Artists.

PROPOSED SCHEDULE FOR 2007-2008

January: In honor of Martin Luther King and in preparation for our Art Fair, students will participate in a "Cultural Menagerie", (each grade will learn about different cultural art and prepare projects for display at our school-wide Art Celebration). For example, Australian digeridu, African batik, Japanese fans, Native American totem poles, etc. The Art Fair, to be held in conjunction with the science fair, will be held in late February or early March.

February: Faith Ringgold In the 1980s Ringgold began making story quilts, an art form that combines storytelling and quilt making with genre painting. Through her brightly colored imagery and mixed media, she examines a broad range of social and political issues. By the 1990s she had become one of the foremost progressive American artists of the twentieth century and a successful author. Ringgold has written and illustrated nine children's books, including "Tar Beach" that has won more than 30 awards, including the Caldecott Honor and the Coretta Scott King award..

March: We will explore textile art this month, with a focus on Carol Arnott, a ScottishTextile master-artist.

April: In connection with “earthday” we hope to create art projects from recycled materials. We will explore the works of master-artist John T. Unger, a sculptor who artfully uses recycled materials.

May: School-wide Art Festival (to be held in a park).

Claude Monet, Master Artist (watercolorist)

POSSIBLE MASTER ARTISTS FOR NEXT YEAR 2008-2009:

Frank Lloyd Wright (architecture)

  • Norman Rockwell (Americana)
  • Ansel Adams (photography)

MASTERS FROM THE PAST

December: Louis Comfort Tiffany:
an American artist and designer who mastered the decorative arts and is best known for his amazing stained glass.

November: Georges-Pierre Seurat

October: Jim Henson

Jim Henson was an amazing man who created more than a hundred memorable characters over a thirty-year career. His puppets were groundbreaking, allowing puppeteers to control more of the puppet than ever before.

One of Jim Henson's largest accomplishments was Sesame Street. This show taught children in 120 countries how to read, count, and share, and demonstrated that television can help children learn. It has been on the air since 1976 and is one of the longest airing shows in history.
Jim Henson began his company in 1955. The Jim Henson Company continues its’ founder’s legacy of creativity, technological achievements, and inspired silliness.
  • Henson was an extraordinary artist and visionary.
  • He was a television pioneer, an innovator in puppetry, technology and visual arts.
  • He was a performer who brought to life such characters as Kermit-the-frog.

September: Diego Rivera

We look forward to presenting our first "Master of the Month" -Diego Rivera, a renowned Mexican artist, painter, muralist. Our study of Diego Rivera will also correspond with this month's artist-in-residence (Norma Pintar, Mexican folk dancer). Here is a sampling of visual art projects that will enhance our exploration of the Hispanic culture during the month of September:

      a. Diego Rivera created a LOT of REALLY BIG murals. Students will learn about murals, and will create unique, colorful murals along the wooden skirting of the portable classrooms.

      b. Many Diego Rivera paintings contain bold flowers (especially calla lilies and sunflowers). Student projects might incorporate flowers, similar to Diego Rivera's.

      c. Diego Rivera was known to mix sand and sawdust with paint to create texture. Students will be learning about design elements, such as texture. Some students will create their own "texture" paintings using paint mixed with sand

      d. Diego Rivera is known as a cubist painter. (geometric patterns which reveal views from different angles. top, side, etc.) Older students will explore the concept of "cubism".
