PUPPETS COME TO LIFE
by Joseph C.

Jeff Gunstream and Buttercup

Jeff Gunstream and Buttercup entertain the kids!

On October 15th the children of Vision Charter School were visited by a very special person. Jeff Gunstream and his team of hand crafted puppets fascinated the children of all ages with his creativity and humor. Mr. Gunstream has been very interested in puppets since he was a young boy. He uses scraps and garbage to create his numerous puppets. Gunstream's first puppet, Buttercup, was used in an improvisational play with some of the children at the end of the presentation.

Mr. Gunstream also talked about his partnership with Brian Henson, Jim Henson's (creator of the Muppets) son. Gunstream has worked on children's television show Bear in the Big Blue House and helped create characters featured in Disney Theme Park rides and floats. Gunstream has also worked with local performing groups most recently Fiddler on the Roof performed by Music Theatre of Idaho which was recently attended by the 6th and 7th grade students.

The students of Vision Charter School were excited to see the puppet making process in action and were familiar with Mr. Gunstream's work.

Jeff Gunstream visited Vision Charter School as part of our study on puppetry and our Master of the Month, Jim Henson. This month has also featured and in depth study of the book, "The Wizard of Oz," by L. Frank Baum. October's month of interesting characters climaxed with a Wizard of Oz themed party which showcased students dressed as characters from the book.

LEADERSHIP GROUP RAISES MONEY FOR CANCER VICTIM:

Dear Vision Charter School Students and Parents;

My name is Abby R. and I am a seventh grade student at VCS in the Leadership Group. We are raising money for a cancer victim who was diagnosed with Leukemia when she was seven or eight years old. Her name is Nicole Murdock. She is ten years old and in fifth grade. She has gone into remission previously and now the cancer has returned. Nicole is very young to be diagnosed with cancer. We are giving 100% of the money we raise to her to grant a wish! The Leadership Group of VCS would love if you would participate in the fundraiser.

Students can bring their change into school and put it into the decorated milk cartons in each room. This fundraiser will end on November 28. We thank you for your time and appreciate if you participate in our fundraiser.

Sincerely,

Abby R., Maddi C., Gabrielle O., Shely W., Dallin H., Zack M.

Hello Vision Charter School Students,

My leadership group is very excited to announce that we are raising money for the Boise Rescue Mission Center, a homeless shelter in Boise. We will be having a coat drive, which starts on November 5th and ends on November 16th. Cardboard boxes will be placed in each classroom and each Friday we will come pick them up. The class with the most coats gets to have a FREE JEAN DAY! We will also be having two separate bake sales. One will be held on November 6th and the other will be held on November 13th. We will bring the food to your classroom during your lunch time. Make sure you bring your money and your coats that don't fit!

Sincerely,

P.S. If you would like to donate food to the bake sale, bring your food the day before for the day of a back sale and put it in D2.

PFA CARTRIDTGE RECYCLING FUNDRAISER!

We are excited to be partnering with Re-Cartridge- Cycle (a local community cartridge recycling company) to help raise funds for our school. There are no door-to-door sales and they do all the work for us! All we need to do is collect and bring in empty printer cartridges. We will receive money for every cartridge we collect.
This is a great opportunity for our school to earn money and contribute back to our community through recycling. It's currently estimated that close to 230 million tons of empty cartridges will be dumped in U.S. landfills this year, with each cartridge taking up to 450 years to decompose.

Re-Cartridge-Cycle has informed us that these cartridges can be recycled and reused many times. We can hlp make a difference by recycling, and at the same time bring money back into our school for much needed teaching resources.

We hope that you will help us support this program by bringing empty injet and laser cartridges from home. You can also collect empty cartridges from neighbors and your place of employment. Simpy bring the cartridges to school and place them in our cartridge collection bins. Re-Cartridge-Cycle will pick up the cartridges and send us a check for our efforts. Re-Cartridge -Cycle is associated with locally owned and operated Cartridge World, and is proud to be offering this recycling program and contributing back to our school and the local community.
With your help, we can collect cartridges and continue raising funds throughout the school year. This is something we can all benefit from- we hope you will be a part! The recycling box is in the office. Please contact Dalana Bishop at 454-2030 if you have additional questions.
